Furlandia took place last weekend and I had a short story published in the conbook.
Set in a Wild West frontier town, The Iron Horse tells the story of a horse whose job is threatened by the arrival of the railroads. It’s only 500 words long, so was quite a challenge to write, but I think it’s one of the best stories I have ever written. I am really happy with how it turned out, not least because I wrote it during a week when I was suffering with particularly bad depression. This makes it one of my stories that I love the most.
I also love Furlandia itself, having been to the convention back in 2017. This was part of a two-week U.S. roadtrip that also took in BLFC, along with various sights and drinking holes across Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
Furlandia is fast becoming a writing con, with a live recording of Rob MacWolf’s The Voice of Dog taking place there. Kyell Gold was Guest of Honor and launched his new book ‘Weasel Under the Sun’ too. There was even a breakfast gathering for the 2025 Cóyotl Awards ceremony, which I managed to dial into via Discord while I was at ConFuzzled.
I would really like to attend Furlandia again one day, having many happy memories of the con nine years ago. It was a real honour to appear in the conbook this year and I hope the con was a huge success.
